Yate Heritage Centre collaborated with Yate Parish to stage a popular Platinum Jubilee community event on Friday the 3rd of June on St Mary’s Green by Yate Heritage Centre.
400 visitors attended the event and were treated to entertainment from the Brigstowes, providing pop music spanning the Queen’s period of reign, a Jubilee storyteller covering royal stories from the past and Thornbury Town Band.
Visitors had plenty to occupy themselves. There were activities and community stalls around the green with children’s crafts and games being particularly popular. Many children were adorned with crown and corgi finger puppets.
As it was a Jubilee event there had to be street party food and St Mary’s Church volunteers made up bags of sandwiches, cakes, coffee and tea conjuring up memories of 1950s and 1970s events.
Inside St Mary’s Church there was a special Jubilee exhibition produced by Yate Heritage Centre covering the history of Yate every 10 years into the reign plus an amazing video compilation of TV during the different decades of the reign.
To complete the event Yate Heritage Centre opened its doors showing its own displays and activities. It was a memorable day. The sun shone through much of the day and even during occasional showers. Thornbury Town Band played on!
