Talking Nature Project – Rewilding Yate

This spring, children from 5 Yate primary schools took part in “Rewilding Yate” at Yate Town Council’s Heritage Centre, a project supported by Museum Development South West, and Arts Council England.

Nearly 200 children from Broadway Infants School, North Road Primary School, Rangeworthy Primary School, Raysfield Primary School, and St Pauls Catholic Primary School, participated in workshops where they learned about the historic landscapes of Yate, and how the growth of the town has taken away from its natural environment. Our children toured the town to see how changes such as new houses, places to work, shop and spend time with our friends, have created natural habitat loss.

Taking inspiration from their walks around the town, and biodiversity workshops with the team at Yate Heritage Centre which focused on rewilding built-up areas, the children worked with a local artist to express their new skills and knowledge through artwork, that shows us how nature can flourish in urban spaces.

This project is due to go on tour, in the participating schools and then at a public exhibition at Yate Heritage Centre from 8th July – 30th August, to showcase the children’s vision for their town.

Yate Heritage Centre and Yate Town Council are passionate about the involvement of children and young people in the creation of our town; we are thrilled to display their amazing work and to help them create a town where they can thrive and where climate and planet issues are prioritised.
